"Strange New World"

White Sands National Monument - New Mexico

The weather reports were not promising. High winds in the forty to fifty  miles per hour with gusts even higher would create near white out conditions from blowing sand.  I knew photographing in these conditions would be challenging and was unsure if I would have much success. To protect my equipment from the blowing sand,  I put my favorite lens on my camera and sealed it in a clear plastic bag.  After rubber banding the bag around the lens I cut an opening from which to shoot. Using sunglasses and a bandana to protect my face I set off.  I was quickly aware of how dramatically the landscape had changed due to the high winds.  The soft flowing ripples I had photographer the previous day had taken on a more irregular and strange pattern. You could see white clouds of sand rising up into the clear blue sky.  I felt like I was on a totally different alien world.
